That’s How We’ve Always Done It

These are six of the most dangerous words that can be said in business.

You know a business has stopped innovating, stopped trying to improve, stopped caring, when those six words are used on a regular basis.

I hate that sentence for two reasons:

  1. It shows a lack of desire from a business to improve the process in some way. The business is stuck in the “old days”, doing things that rightly or wrongly, are done just to get the job done.
  2. It shows there are employees that really don’t care about the work they’re doing. This is like saying it’s not my job.

This means that it is up to the business to encourage its employees to look for improvements on a regular basis. To look for innovation, to look for something different.

The problem is, it’s hard to put in a job description “innovate”. It’s hard to have a KPI for “make improvements”.

That means a business must inspire its employees to bring more than just the job description.

They have to bring their creativity, the one thing processes and systems try to remove. The one thing all other businesses try to stamp out.

So if you have employees creative enough to not have to use the words, That’s How We’ve Always Done It, does that mean you’ll have a business unlike all the others?
